Severin gives Spirou 1001 jobs

In two recent issues of the Journal de Spirou (#4062 and #4066), subscribers have received as their exclusive bonus gift a little strip booklet by Al Severin.

At 22 single-strip pages, each booklet contains an episode of Les 1000 et 1 métiers de Spirou, Fantasio & Spip (“The 1001 Jobs of Spirou, Fantasio & Spip”), an ongoing, loosely connected story. In the first episode, Coup de pompe! (the titles are based on untranslatable puns), our heroes work as gas station attendants, and in the second (Coup de feu!) as fire fighters.

According to InediSpirou, the plan is to collect all the episodes (the number of which hasn’t been specified, though it will probably be less than 1001!) as a proper book, currently planned for publication this year. Printed in landscape format, perhaps similar to Spirou par Chaland, it won’t officially be part of the Le Spirou de… one-shot series or (obviously) the main series, but it’s nevertheless another new Spirou & Fantasio adventure, and if it does come out in 2016 that will make five in one year, easily a record.

Al’s previous Spirou comics include “The First Fantasio“, a story in last year’s retro-themed summer issue, and two pages of an “abandoned” adventure in the second edition of Spirou sous le manteau (“Spirou Under the Counter”). While the drawing style and the presentation still seek to capture an old-fashioned look, and the story is firmly set in the first half of the twentieth century, “The 1001 Jobs of Spirou & Fantasio” does not seem to build on the fiction that these really are lost comics from WWII, as “Spirou Under the Counter” pretends.
