Spirou and Fantasio filming (ill. Munuera; (c) Dupuis and the artist)

The film rights to The Adventures of Spirou and Fantasio have been secured, and a script is currently being written, according to a story reported by several French-language news sites this week, picking up on tweets by producer Marc Missonnier at production company Fidélité Films. Fidélité’s previous movies include the live-action adaptations Little Nicholas, based on a series of children’s books by Goscinny and Sempé, and Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia, as well as the rather more celebrated films by François Ozon (8 Women, Swimming Pool).

The script is being entrusted to writers Mathieu Oullion (Radiostars, La grande boucle) and Cécile Sellam (De l’huile sur le feu, Denis). The one thing we know about it is that the film will not feature the Marsupilami, since  those film rights were sold separately a few years ago to the production company of director Alain Chabat for the film HOUBA! On the Trail of the Marsupilami.

I grew up reading Spirou in Scandinavian translations. Now I'm learning French and trying to decode the originals.

  1. As far as I can remember, it is not the first time someone have made a film version of Spirou. I have not seen it myself, but I think it was based on stories by Tome and Janry.

  2. I think this is supposed to be a live-action film, and earlier, the series have only been adapted for animation as TV series.

There has been two different series, the first one was highly based on the Tome and Janry albums, and produced for two seasons, 1992 and 1995. The second series was produced in 2006, not clearly based on any particular authors, and largely aimed at an audience not already familiar with the characters.
